THYROID:- A large bilobed endocrine gland of craniate vertebrates that arises as a median ventral outgrowth of the pharynx, lies in the anterior base of the neck or anterior ventral part of the thorax, is often accompanied by lateral accessory glands sometimes more or less fused with the main mass, and produces especially the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
- A preparation of the thyroid gland of various domesticated food animals (as pigs) containing 1/10% of iodine combined in thyroxine and used in treating thyroid disorders -- called also thyroid extract.

THYROIDITIS: inflammation of the thyroid gland THYROID STORM: a sudden life-threatening exacerbation of the symptoms (as high fever, tachycardia, weakness, or extreme restlessness) of hyperthyroidism that is brought on by various causes (as infection, surgery, or stress). THYROTROPIN: a hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis of the pituitary gland that regulates the formation and secretion of thyroid hormone -- called also thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyrotropic hormone, TSH. THYROID HORMONE: any of several closely related metabolically active compounds (as triiodothyronine) that are stored in the thyroid gland in the form of thyroglobulin or circulate in the blood apparently bound to plasma protein, especially Thyroxine. LONG-ACTING THYROID STIMULATOR: a protein that often occurs in the plasma of patients with Graves' disease and may be an IgG immunoglobulin -- abbreviation LATS.
